Yohimbe (AKA Yohimbine) comes from the bark of an African evergreen tree called the Pausinystalia johimbe, which is found in western and central Africa.

While popular among weightlifters and weight loss supplements it can also be found in many of the most popular broad-spectrum ED supplements

Unfortunately, its lack of scientific backing and reputation for gastrointestinal issues and other side effects have placed it on the questionable list for Man Up.

So where does it get its power?

Many researchers believe that Yohimbine works by blocking receptors in your body called alpha-2 adrenergic receptors, which prevent erections. [i] [ii]

Additionally, while this may not be a surprise, Yohimbine, like most of our other miracles from Mother Nature, releases nitric oxide and increases in blood flow the big guy.[iii]

And what results, if any, are scientifically valid?

A review of seven controlled studies showed promise in treating erectile dysfunction.[iv]  Of these studies, one, in particular, stood out with 34% of patients experiencing at least a partial improvement in symptoms after 30 days, while 20% of patients reported full and sustained erections, and 7% taking a placebo reported improvements.[v]

So what’s the downside?

Yohimbe supplement manufacturers are notoriously careless and inaccurate when it comes to disclosing how much actual Yohimbe is in each pill.

In fact, researchers from Harvard Medical School examined 49 different Yohimbe supplements and discovered that 78% of them did not clearly label how much Yohimbine was in the product. The actual amounts of Yohimbine in the supplements ranged from 28% to 147% of what was actually listed on the label.[vi]

As for those gastrointestinal issues, a separate study reported the most common side effects as gastrointestinal distress, increased heart rate, anxiety, and high blood pressure. Even worse, a few people reported life-threatening events, including heart attack, seizure, and acute kidney injury.[vii]

For the minimal amount of benefit yet a large amount of risk I recommend Yohimbe purely as an experimental supplement to be taken on its own for short periods of time.    Let’s check out our Rock Star Rating for Yohimbe.
