Horny Goat Weed (HGW)
As one of the most popular ingredients in male potency formulas, this could indeed win the award for the most overhyped product on the market. Horny Goat Weed, like most other supplements, increases your nitric oxide production but also contains a flavonoid called icariin, which is known to mimic testosterone.
The research on its effectiveness for humans is limited if not missing entirely. In fact, I couldn’t find any studies except one animal study. In this study, researchers showed how HGW makes rats “horny” and sexually active due to its active ingredient icariin, which naturally blocks the PDE-5 enzyme similar to Viagra, Levitra, and Cialis.[i]
Realistically, while you won’t get as much blood pumping through your magic wand as a pharmaceutical drug, (studies show Viagra to be 80x more potent) a good dose of 100% pure organic HGW may give you a slight boost in blood flow.[ii]
Unfortunately, there are loads of side effects from HGW including:
- Dizziness
- Dry mouth
- Nosebleed
- Severe breathing problems
- Slows blood clotting
- Irregular heartbeat
- Vomiting
- Spasms
- Fainting
Personally, I’ve experimented with formulations that have HGW but they all gave me diarrhea and made me feel like I slammed 3 cups of coffee in 3 minutes. So, if you take this route just make sure to stick to products that are 100% pure organic HGW or else you could end up with volcano butt and serious gas issues, especially if you have a sensitive stomach to like I do.
Since there are several other much more powerful supplements with fewer side effects available I recommend avoiding it altogether.
