“When great evil occurs, great good follows” – Nichiren Daishonin
On this very auspicious day (post election day) where we now find ourselves in the USA being led by a shallow man named Donald Trump who has known tendencies towards racism, sexism and blatant arrogance, I thought long and hard before posting today’s Wednesday Wisdom.
It would be really easy to point fingers, blame people, get angry and depressed, but like Nichiren Daishonin, the great Buddhist Sage from Japan once said: ”
“Great events never have minor omens. When great evil occurs, great good follows. Since great slander already exists in our land, the great correct Law will spread without fail. What could any of you have to lament? Even if you are not the Venerable Mahākāshyapa, you should all perform a dance. Even if you are not Shāriputra, you should leap up and dance. When Bodhisattva Superior Practices emerged from the earth, did he not emerge dancing? And when Bodhisattva Universal Worthy arrived, the ground shook in six different ways.”
Ok even if you don’t know much about the Buddhist cannon of sutras, its clear Nichiren is telling us that something fantastic is happening, something to sing dance and celebrate. What you say… “Sing Dance, Celebrate” we are about to enter armageddon with walls, burning muslims and trillions in federal debt.
Yes, celebrate! Because guess what, had the election been won by Clinton, the Trumpeters would have declared revolution and really burned down the world. Why… because these are shallow people, who simply don’t have the capacity or foresight to see the opportunity for growth, for the light at the end of the tunnel. All they see is loss, scarcity and vengeance.
Ok so now we, the leaders of the spiritual and evolved, we have an unprecedented opportunity to dig in deep and really search our souls. Yes there will be some pain, but we will emerge twice as strong, twice as wise, twice as compassionate and we will again change the tide with monumental achievements of valor and humanitarianism.
I’ll leave you with one more deep ass thought to ponder. Also from the Buddhist cannon, the oneness of good and evil is a central concept in the Lotus Sutra taught by Shakyamuni Buddha during the last 10 years of his life. Basically, evil is necessary and it serves a purpose. It allows good to arise and vanquish evil, that is its purpose. Without evil we would not be inspired to rise up, maximize our capacity and see how freaking amazing we are, how tremendous our power is when we are guided by something larger that us, which serves the greater good.
Now go out and vanquish evil!
